Our Story

Finding our way back to one another.

A story about presence, spontaneity, and the quiet power of meeting in real life.

Where it began

Do you remember a time before modern technology took over — when people simply ran into each other on the main square of the village?

When your grandparents' house was always full of neighbors, friends, and family.

When you could just show up on someone's doorstep without announcing it, without planning, without asking permission.

“It just... happened.”

Finding each other wasn't something you scheduled.

It just... happened.

These moments have become rather rare nowadays.

Yet somehow, they were the foundation of our society.

What We Lost Along the Way

In some southern cultures, where life happens more outdoors, this way of living still exists. But in many countries in the northern hemisphere, modernization, welfare systems, and industrial evolution slowly changed our social rhythms. We learned to prioritize our financial independence, our career and individuality above our social circle. We evolved from depending on each other to depending on a system.

Across Europe and beyond, loneliness has become a quiet epidemic, because the natural structures that once held us together have slowly dissolved. Communities became optional. Relationships became flexible. Time became something to manage instead of something to live. The consequence of this made unplanned gatherings disappear, communities become quieter, family contact slowly fades away and time management became our biggest excuse.

In Western society especially, we live ahead of time.

“Through modern technology we are supposed to be more connected than ever — and yet we feel more alone.”

Agendas are filled with future plans.

Days are spent rushing from one appointment to the next.

Through modern technology we are supposed to be more connected than ever — and yet we feel more alone.

The Problem Isn't You

Modern society taught us to be autonomous, independent, and efficient.

But in doing so, it quietly removed the spaces where connection naturally happens.

We no longer depend on one another — so we no longer meet one another.

“Social isolation is not a personal weakness.”

We schedule life — instead of encountering it.

We scroll — instead of gathering.

Social isolation is not a personal weakness.

It is the result of a world that values individual performance more than shared presence.

The Solution: The Power of the Present Moment

As the founders of U-turnity, we've traveled and lived in many places around the world. Somehow we noticed that places where life is more unstable and unpredictable, there is a different concept of time. Tomorrow is not a guarantee, so making plans for the future is unnecessary. Nobody can plan ahead of time, that's why the present moment is what matters most.

We noticed that in places where the present moment is all there is, that people are more joyful and happy. Interaction with the community around you becomes a lot easier, because at least they have the perception of having time for unexpected encounters. These areas in general struggle less with social isolation and loneliness, because spontaneity is the fundament of their community. Our lives are so overplanned and scheduled that we often even forget that there actually is a present moment to live.

“Tomorrow is not a guarantee, so making plans for the future is unnecessary.”

Bringing the focus back to the present moment and opening up for unsuspected encounters can often change the entire course of a day.

When people open themselves more for spontaneity, connecting does not need that much effort, it generally emerges by itself.

Why We Created U-turnity

U-turnity was created as a response to what we've lost — and a bridge back to what truly matters.

“U-turnity was created as a response to what we've lost — and a bridge back to what truly matters.”

By restoring spontaneous contact little by little. Encouraging people to create or attend unexpected encounters today, tomorrow or the day after tomorrow. No planning ahead, just opening up for what the present moment might bring you.

By changing how we relate to time — loosening control and allowing the unexpected — we create conditions for connection, belonging, and joy.

Conclusion

U-turnity exists to help make that possible again. One moment. One encounter. One day at a time.

U-turnity starts with small, simple shifts.

“And small changes, over time, can create a big impact.”

And small changes, over time, can create a big impact.

By focusing on what matters today, living in the present becomes natural again — with lasting effects on how you experience life and the community around you.
